Charaxes Imperialis is a photographic project inspired by the African Butterfly collection (20,000 specimens) bequeathed to me by my Grandfather. By drawing parallels with the Butterfly collection itself (now housed within the Natural History museum, London), the work re-addresses and questions the collective history and legacy of empire. The DBACE award would enable me to carry out further research and complete my project, which would culminate in a multi-faceted exhibition; this in turn would help me engage a wider audience, stimulate further discussion on the subject and raise my profile as an emerging artist.
