Garriga, a trained architect from Barcelona, envisions a new online knowledge resource enabling an important change in our current society. Bookcase Ltd. is a non-for-profit organisation based in Glasgow, UK, dedicated to the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of books. My Bookcase interactive platform has been created to offer a potential solution to an alarming situation: the closing of physical bookshops and public libraries. By going back in time we have analyzed the origins that prompted Benjamin Franklin and the Leather Apron Club of Philadelphia to established the first public Circulating Library in 1731. Books were quite expensive at the time and by pooling resources, many volumes could be shared among contributing members. This new library was built to expand and evolve, a shifting arrangement of ideas and objects constantly circulating in a community of committed readers. (Bulletins of the Serving Library, 2011. R. Giampetro & D. Reinfurt.) And we have shaped an extended knowledge and research into an alternate evolution of the library model. One that responds to those original needs as well as taking advantage of the last technologies. Without leading into an isolated lifestyle behind a computer screen. Coming soon… www.mybookcase.org an interactive platform through which individuals can share the contents of their private bookshelves, and arrange to meet and borrow books from others in their locality. An experimental service generated by a community, for a community, stimulating knowledge exchange, debate and interaction. On Twitter @my_book_case Like on Facebook
