The Tipping Point is an arts project advocating for personal and political change for young people in contact with the youth justice system, which holds a belief in the transformative power of the arts and – at its heart – the importance of telling new stories in new ways to new and diverse audiences. The project runs in three phases: 1) Running workshops with young people drawing on the pedagogical practices of Augusto Boal and Paulo Friere, narrative theory work, physical theatre, bringing this work together through reflective emceeing/poetry work. The combination of exercises are designed to help these young person to gain a sense of a personal tipping point, a point where an informed and conscious choice to change the course of their story which could support breaking the cycle of reoffending. 2) Developing a devised piece with a team of professional actors (who have been facilitating the young people’s workshops), sound, light and set designers and director exploring the lives of young people in contact with the youth justice system. The piece will fuse movement work, verbatim text and emceeing in performance. Some participants from workshops will be involved in the devising process as consultants over the material. 3) Touring the piece to secure centres and arts venues across the UK, delivering workshops with young people and facilitating post-show discussions with audiences of young people and youth justice professionals. We will have a film-maker recording the findings of the devising process, workshops and post-show discussions for a short documentary film (further extending the reach of the project).
