The winners of the 2016 Deutsche Bank Awards for Creative Enterprise (DBACE) were announced at an Awards event in London on 27 April. Shortlisted candidates spent the day pitching their ideas and business plans to five panels of well-known figures across the arts. One of the most established, longest running graduate enterprise programmes, DBACE has given £1.5m to young creative students across all arts sectors to help them launch their own enterprise and business projects.
The winning projects across five creative arts categories showcase artistic applications and solutions to a range of topical issues.
Art and Photography: M62 the trans-Pennine Motorway is an exploration of the social and economic impact of the M62 motorway
Craft and Design: Equinox Digital uses a combination of ‘drone’ technology and 3D mapping which will preserve important cultural archaeological sites for posterity
Film: Samaanata brings together a medical student and film maker to make a documentary which explores gender-based violence
Music: Rhythm Passport is a free online magazine and gig guide to change perceptions and grow new audiences for world music
Performance: The Living Room Circus is a travelling circus company which will provide an immersive and inclusive performance for all ages in a circus tent transformed into a living room in art festivals across Europe.
Winners receive £10,000 and runners-up £1,000 each. They will all be given year-long business mentoring from a Deutsche Bank executive and two days of intensive small business training to help launch their careers.
Judging panels for each of the five categories included prominent arts industry figures such as Jamie Scallion, songwriter and author; Nigel Hurst, Chief Executive, The Saatchi Gallery; Chris Paul Daniels, British Film maker and lecturer at Manchester School of Art; and Alistair Spalding, Chief Executive, Sadler’s Wells; as well as senior Deutsche Bank executives, many of whom have professional experience in the arts.

Since 1993, DBACE has helped hundreds of final year and recently graduated arts students negotiate the challenges of self-employment, with the support of start-up capital, enterprise training and business mentoring as part of Deutsche Bank’s commitment to drive positive change in society through Made for Good, its global enterprise programme. More than 177 careers have been launched as a result, and many more students have been inspired to consider setting up a project or enterprise of their own.
There are no specific creative briefs within the award categories but seeking artistic solutions to health, wellbeing and mindfulness issues are prominent themes that this year’s candidates have chosen to address. They have presented innovative ideas using technology and art to explore making spaces for community and social enterprise set-ups.
Nicole Lovett, Head of Corporate Citizenship UK at Deutsche Bank, explains why the Deutsche Bank Awards for Creative Enterprise are important, ‘The creative industries contribute £84billion a year to the UK economy and are crucial to both individual and community well-being. The winners of 2016 DBACE have demonstrated the potential to become successful entrepreneurs who will continue to grow this creative eco-system. The Awards prepare students to overcome specific challenges, and help them towards investment readiness and long-term sustainability.’
